How the route planner works out your charging stops

Enter your start and destination — with as many stops along the way as your trip needs — and pick your Tesla model and variant. The planner calculates energy use leg by leg using real-world Wh/mi efficiency data rather than the rated figure on the spec sheet, works out where you'd actually need to stop to avoid running the battery down, and routes exclusively through the Supercharger network. Rather than cutting it fine, it targets a sensible arrival charge at each stop instead of routing you down to empty.

Tips for a smoother Supercharger road trip

  • Leave home at 80–90%, not 100%. The last 20% of any charge is the slowest — see our charge time calculator for why.
  • Navigate to the Supercharger, don't just drive there. Routing through the car's own navigation triggers automatic battery preconditioning, so you arrive ready to charge at full speed.
  • Aim to arrive with 10–20%, not empty. A near-empty arrival risks a slow, cautious final few miles — and DC charging is fastest starting from a lower state of charge anyway.
  • Check charger status on busy routes. Popular sites can have a stall or two offline, especially around holidays — the in-car map and app both show live status before you commit to a stop.
