The Model 3 is the best-selling Tesla worldwide, and the model with the most real-world battery data available. Whether you're a current owner checking on your battery or evaluating a used Model 3, this guide covers what to expect across the car's lifetime.

Model 3 Battery Variants

Tesla has used several different battery configurations in the Model 3. Understanding which one your car has is important because they behave differently.

LFP batteries tolerate being charged to 100% daily without significant additional degradation. Tesla actually recommends this for LFP packs to keep the BMS calibrated.

Real-World Degradation Data

The First 50,000 Miles

This is where the steepest drop occurs. Most Model 3 Long Range owners report losing between 3% and 7% of original capacity. A car that started at 350 miles of range might show 325–340 miles at 100%. This is normal — the initial SEI layer formation accounts for most of this loss, and the rate slows dramatically after.

50,000 to 150,000 Miles

Degradation slows considerably. Owners typically see an additional 3% to 5% loss, bringing the total to around 8% to 12% at the 150,000-mile mark. Well within warranty.

Beyond 150,000 Miles

The trend continues to flatten. Tesla's published data suggests average retention of approximately 85% after 200,000 miles. Some high-mileage owners who charge primarily at home report even better retention.

What Affects Model 3 Degradation?

Charging habits are the single biggest controllable factor. For NCA/NMC packs, keep daily charging between 20% and 80%. For LFP packs, charge to 100% as Tesla recommends. Supercharging frequency — occasional use is fine. Daily reliance may cause slightly faster degradation over years, but the difference is modest. Climate — heat accelerates degradation. Cars in hot climates may degrade slightly faster despite Tesla's thermal management. Driving style — frequent hard acceleration increases thermal load. Gentle driving is kinder to the pack over hundreds of thousands of miles.
