Working out what a mile in your Tesla actually costs

The sum is simpler than it looks. Take the efficiency your car reports in the Energy app — Wh per mile (or Wh/km) — divide it by 1,000 to get kWh per mile, then multiply by what you pay per kWh. A Model 3 or Model Y averaging 250 Wh/mi on a 27p/kWh home tariff works out at roughly 7p a mile, or about £6.75 for every 100 miles you drive.

Use your own lifetime Wh/mi average rather than a brochure figure and the result reflects how you actually drive — a motorway commuter and a city driver in the same model can be 20% apart.

Charging losses: the energy you pay for but never use

Not every kWh your meter records reaches the battery. Some is lost as heat in the onboard charger and cabling, and more goes on keeping the pack at a sensible temperature while it charges — so AC home charging is typically around 85–90% efficient. In practice, the 45 kWh you put into the car might cost you closer to 50 kWh on the bill.

It's a modest effect, but it's why your electricity bill can run slightly ahead of what a pure Wh/mi calculation predicts. Cold weather widens the gap, because more of that energy goes into warming the battery before charging can begin in earnest.

Where your charging mix makes the biggest difference

The price you pay per kWh varies far more than your car's efficiency ever will. A standard UK home tariff sits around 24–30p/kWh, a dedicated overnight EV tariff can drop under 10p, Superchargers typically run 30–45p, and other public rapid chargers reach 50–90p. Shifting even a few charges a month from rapid chargers to a cheap overnight window moves your average cost per mile more than any change in driving style could.

If you can charge at home, setting a scheduled departure time so the car charges inside your tariff's off-peak window is the single highest-value habit — and it suits the battery too, since the pack finishes charging shortly before you leave rather than sitting at a high state of charge all night.

Tesla charging cost FAQs

How much does it cost to charge a Tesla?
Your cost comes down to two numbers: how much energy the car uses (its efficiency, in Wh per mile or kWh per 100 km) and what you pay per kWh. A typical Model 3 or Model Y uses around 250 Wh/mi, so at a UK home rate of 27p/kWh that's roughly 7p per mile, or about £6.75 to add 100 miles. Charge on a cheap overnight EV tariff and the same 100 miles can drop closer to £2.50.
Is it cheaper to charge at home or at a Supercharger?
Home charging is almost always cheaper. A standard home tariff runs around 24–30p/kWh in the UK and an off-peak EV tariff can be 10p or less, while Superchargers typically sit at 30–45p/kWh and public rapid chargers can be 50–90p/kWh. Doing the bulk of your charging at home and using Superchargers only on longer trips is the single biggest thing you can do to cut running costs.
Does battery degradation make my Tesla cost more to run?
Not really — degradation lowers how far a full charge takes you, but it barely changes the cost per mile, because you're still paying for the same energy to cover the same distance. What genuinely moves your cost per mile is efficiency: motorway speeds, cold weather and heavy climate-control use all push consumption up, so the car costs a little more per mile in winter than in mild conditions.
How do I find my Tesla's energy consumption?
Your Tesla shows it in the Energy app as a lifetime or trip average in Wh/mi (or Wh/km). Use that figure in the calculator for a result tailored to how you actually drive, rather than a generic estimate. If you don't have it to hand, 250 Wh/mi is a reasonable starting point for a Model 3 or Model Y.
